Arctic pollution in a One Health perspective – from complex challenges to sustainable solutions (ArcSolution)
The Arctic faces unprecedented challenges due to climate change and pollution from both local and distant sources, which impact human life, wildlife, and fragile ecosystems. These complex, interrelated issues require an integrated approach. ArcSolution adopts the One Health framework, acknowledging the interconnectedness of people, animals, and the environment. By combining local knowledge with multidisciplinary scientific research, ArcSolution seeks to understand and mitigate the effects of pollution in the Arctic, with a focus on developing solutions that benefit Arctic communities.
ArcSolution aims to address pollution and health challenges in the Arctic through research in Northern Finland, Svalbard, Northern Norway, and Greenland. The project focuses on pollutants like PFAS, mercury, microplastics, and pathogens, while also integrating citizen science projects and local priorities. By collaborating with Arctic communities, ArcSolution will develop mitigation strategies in areas like circular economy and chemicals management. The project aims to inform policies that protect both Arctic ecosystems and populations, contributing to global sustainability goals and reducing pollutant exposure for future generations.
