The polar oceans are important regulators of the global climate system. They are also among the ecosystems most impacted by warming. This has implications for the ecosystem services they provide for society. Two essential services include a unique biodiversity and a potential for climate change mitigation through a significant uptake of atmospheric CO2. The Polar Ocean Mitigation Potential (POMP) project aims to increase scientific knowledge on how climate change will impact biodiversity and CO2 uptake. Activities range from building detailed local- and regional-scale process understanding, for example on impacts of sea-ice loss and glacial melt on carbon burial rates, to pan-Arctic and Antarctic assessment of ecosystem functioning with the aim of translating project outcomes into management actions.
The objective is to improve accuracy and spatiotemporal resolution of current assessments of polar carbon sinks and biodiversity, including how these are impacted by climate change. Findings will result in recommended actions to support maintenance and enhancement of healthy ecosystems, including their biodiversity and climate regulatory services.
